I went on the Machias Seal Island trip last week--there were scores or of puffins, but they were outnumbered at least 10 to 1 by razorbills; there were also quite a few common murres.
If anyone goes to this place, you might consider staying in the "staging area" rather than going to a blind. In the blinds you see the puffins etc. up close, but you can see them perfectly well (esp. with a scope) from the staging area, and there are all kinds of dry land-type birds visible from there in addition to the seabirds. There were up to 10 savannah sparrrows in sight at once; there was one Nelson's, several other sparrows I could not ID for sure, and several warblers--saw all these in 15 minutes or so waiting for to leave the island, after an hour in the blind.
John, hope the surgery goes well. Go Sox! !
(Many warblers around here, BTW.)
