With the excitement in Jacksonville you may not want to leave, but for any of you who have not yet birded Costa Rica, Savegre Mountain Hotel in Cerra de la Muerte is the place to go for high cloud forest birds. It used to be Monteverde before it was destroyed. May 1 is the beginning of the green season, when the rates drop, the tourist leave and the birds are nesting. There are now over 80 pairs of Quetzals in the valley. We saw a Dark Pewee with white spots across it's forehead. Marino Chacon (son of founder) told me it was partial albino, but with Angel and Mariel's excellent recent post I understand it's Leucism. Thank you for that info. Tarcoles and Carara on the Pacific is a fabulous area for coastal, dry forest and wet forest birds. In January, on the Tarcoles river, we saw 5 of the 6 kingfishers in two hours. Ask for Wilkie. Also, of course, Selva Verde is great. That area now has increased its numbers of Green Macaws to over 140 pairs through great conservation work.
