Thanks to Peter and Carlos! Today, we brought Marc's two cousins, 11 and 13, on their first official bird trip, and presented them with checklists so as to start their life lists. Their first species after the presentation was Loggerhead Shrike at the Kendall-Tamiami air museum parking lot, then several meadowlarks, but no owls by the cones. And then...a whole family of 5 or 6, conspicuous along the fence line perpendicular to the one bordering the parking lot right before arriving at the parking lot. No cones marked the spot, the youngest cousin got frame-filling pictures.
