I ve done some kayaking out of Everglades Holiday Park over the last year out the main canal along the 67A Levee to the Miami Canal, the Miami Canal to mile or so north of the intersection of its intersection with the South New River Canal, and the South New River Canal back to the starting point. The only good landing sites along this route are where the Miami Canal goes under the 67A Levee and at Picnic Island a mile or two north of the intersection of the Miami Canal and the South Fork New River Canal. Neither of these sites offers much in the way of bird habitat; the 67A Levee site is mostly bare levee and Picnic Island is mostly Australian Pines. There may be other landings farther north along the Miami Canal but a water control structure cuts off access to Alligator Alley boat ramps. The areas off the canals are accessible only to airboats or very shallow draft boats equipped with ten foot high flags to make them visible to airboats.
The most attractive stretch is along the Miami Canal between the 67A intersection to the South New River Canal which has many old Pond Apples and Bald Cypress trees along the bank. The South New River Canal stretch has smaller trees but has a lot of Spatter Dock along the shoreline which is attractive to Purple Gallinules. Landbirds I ve seen during the summer in this area include Eastern Kingbird, White-eyed Vireo, Common Yellowthroat, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Red-shouldered Hawk, Northern Mockingbird, and Northern Cardinal.
