Since Gary and I will not be able to join the TAS walk to Key Largo on May 16th, we headed down that way this morning.

On Card Sound Road, just south of the toll booth, we were treated to good looks at a Yellow warbler. Also seen in this area was a male Common Yellowthroat, Brown-headed Cowbirds, Green Herons, 7 Ruddy Turnstones, singing Prairie warblers and the usual Red-winged Blackbirds and Laughing Gulls.

From here, we drove down to Carysfort road, where we heard a Mangrove Cuckoo! It was in the hammock near the intersection of Carysfort and the main road. The key word here is "heard" and not seen! We figure we must be getting closer to seeing one this way, hopefully!! This same area was very noisy and busy with White-eyed Vireos, Black-whiskered Vireo, Cardinals, and a male Black-throated Blue and Cape May warblers, both male and female. Two Common Ground Doves were foraging along the side of the road.

At Dagney Johnson Botanical Site, no Cuckoo was heard or seen, but we did see a Blackpoll plus several Redstarts, and a Cape May warbler, in addition to the many vireos calling around the park.

To finish the day, we drove by Cutler Wetlands(mudflats!!), busy with the usual birds previously reported, and then to Bill Sadowski Park, where the only warblers encountered were Redstarts and a Black & White warbler in the tree arboretum. The park was very quiet except for the very large party that was getting under way in the picnic area!

Maybe not as exciting as Key West last Saturday, but still a nice day out birding!
