While birding in Alva, during te TAS fieldtrip to Ft. Desoto, I posed the question - "How did Alva get its name." Was it Thomas Alva Edison's middle name, which inspired the naming of this quaint little town, home of the White's feeders Lazuli Indigo & Painted Buntings and Pine Siskins) and of a Red-headed Woodpecker in a nearby field that Brian leads us to every year? Edison wintered in Ft. Myers and it seemed like a logical choice. Wrong my friends - Alva was founded by a Danish sea captain named Peter Nelson around 1900. Upon acquiring the land, he noticed many small white flowers, called Alva Flowers (sabatia brevifolia); hence the name of the town. The flower is quite beautiful. Life is good...................
