i thought Barnes was disappointing the first week of April, Everglades had fewer species and numbers than i've seen in the past, even Wako and Green Cay did not meet my expectations. Here in Birmingham, AL at our botanical gardens, numbers and diversity are significantly down from prior years. In south FL, even some of the jewels recently sighted (e.g., Tropical Kingbird, Grassquit, and Forktailed Flycatcher) are extremely common species in the Carribean/Central/South America. Animal Planet's telecast 2 nights ago of the plight of Red Knot and Horseshoe Crab did nothing to instill confidence. I wish there were a more concerted central governmental effort to report on the ebb and flow of bird species populations seasonally as well as annually. Although there have been some positive recent signs of bird numbers (e.g. banding in AL at Fort Morgan this past sring), my sense is that too many of our neotropical migrants are continuing to diminish. The bird board is invaluable to all of us for monitoring trends. Thanks again for all the great reports. -ken archambault, birmingham, alabama
