My wife and I arrived in Ft. Lauderdale at midnight last night, and didn't start birding in earnest until afternoon today - mostly in the Key Largo Botanical State Park. Afternoon birding is predictably slow, but along the back country permit trail, it was fun enough. A Wood Thrush and Swainson's Thrush popped out of the woods together, feeding in the road. A Cape May was the highlight among several warblers. Black-throated Blue, Black-and-White, American Redstart, and Common Yellowthroat weren't hard. But no Black-whiskered Vireos or Mangrove Cuckoos yet. Too early?
I did get one lifer on the day. I'm finally here late enough in the spring to get Gray Kingbirds.
