Mort Cooper,et al. birded the Florida Keys (Monroe County) on Saturday, May 12, 2001 for the Spring Migration Bird Count. We experienced a major fallout of warblers, particularly in the Lower Keys. Highlights included a 14" Coral Snake at the North Key Largo Botanical site,(3) calling Antillean Nighthawks behind Marathon Airport after dusk (8:30 p.m) along with a rare Limpkin (for the Keys) that flew right in front of us into the airport. Over a hundred Bobolinks, scads of Black-whiskered Vireos, 10 warbler species, including Cuban Yellow Warbler (Card Sound Tollbooth), an albinistic Blackpoll (all white head) a late Louisiana Waterthrush,a few drafts at the No Name Pub and several Key Deer on No Name Key were other highlights. Be careful if you bird Boot Key. We came upon two young males on a cellphone in an SUV with the sound of a big fast boat in the backround. They pulled a couple of hundred yards up the road and waited until we left. Life is good, but sometimes dangerous........
