PHOTO: THE MAGNOLIA AT EVERGREEN

I went out hoping for great things. I stopped a Sadowski first and found a few warblers nothing new or exciting. There were several SWIFTs flying overhead but pretty quiet. I left and went to AD Barnes to find birds in the fruiting tree near the parking lot close to the gate at the board walk. I walked the hammock area and the pine area in the back and found:
Wormeating
Palm
Prairie
Parula
Magnolia
Cape May
Yellow Throated
Ovenbird
Blackpoll
Black-throated Blue
Black-throated Green
Black and White
Red Start
Blue-headed Vireo
I then went to Matheson to find the Blue-winged Warbler and found it and a male Hooded. I only stayed a few minutes due to the report of a Kirtland s at Evergreen Cemetery .
I flew to Ft Lauderdale and found Carlos and John munching on lunch getting ready to look for the bird again. There were many warblers in the trees and I began searching.
Remember how I was complaining about not seeing BT Blues, well began to wish they would go away. Seemed that every other bird I looked at was a BT Blue. After about an hour of looking John played the Kirtland call and not long after the bird showed up. I didn t ever look at the bird in my binoculars just my camera lens and started trying to get a good photo. The photos didn t look very good or bright enough in my camera to tell much there in the field so, others continue to come to see the bird.
Turns out the bird was a Magnolia, but a very plain Magnolia as compared to the one I saw earlier in the morning so the difference in how brightly colored the bird in the morning was made me continue to believe it could be a Kirtland s. When Brian arrived the bird was quickly call a Magnolia by Brian and the birders there from Michigan. I am posting pictures of the bird that was mistaken and the Magnolia from this morning to show the wide range in plumage.
John felt horrible about the miss-ID, but it was fun for a while thinking I was in the presence of a Kirtland s.
As a consolation there were a huge variety of warblers to choose from other than the BIRD... such as Blue-winged Warbler and Swainson s Warbler.
Maybe next time
