I did considerable searching first (and own a field guide)...I know what I saw and with the other blackbird on the wire just a few feet away, the comparison between size, shape and coloring were unmistakable. He was close enough for me to really get a good look at him. The scarlet tanger has a red head--his was jet black. Admittedly, I am a novice birder, but when I finally stumbled across a picture of the red-breasted blackbird on google, I instantly knew that is what I had seen. Really wish he hadn't flown away when I moved to go retrieve a camera for proof, but the incident was so unexpected. Posting the sighting here had been suggested to me...
