I just rolled in the door from several fabulous days in the Dry Tortugas. The birding was a bit on the slow side, but I'll spin that in a positive way and be glad that so many birds were able to wing their way straight to the mainland.
One major highlight was spotted last night (4/11/2009) by Patty of Larry Manfredi's bird tour: La Sagra's Flycatcher!!! A very pale breasted flycatcher with some rufous on the tail. We all got very nice looks in the evening light and several photographs from Larry and myself will be posted. I spent a couple hours Sunday morning at its last known whereabouts (the vegetation near the brick pile between the dock and north coaling dock) but I could not refind the bird.
A few other sightings:
Upland Sandpiper
Whimbrel (2)
Glossy Ibis
Summer Tanager
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Gray Kingbird (2+)
Black-whiskered Vireo
Short-eared Owl (Loggerhead Key on Sunday by Larry's group)
Grasshopper Sparrow
It's always tough to leave the Tortugas! Good luck to those who visit in the next few weeks.
