This Rose-breasted Grosbeak was a nice suprise at my feeder, today. This male (1st year?) was timid & skittish after it fist arrived, but towards the end of the day, it was out-bluffing the Blue Jays and even giving the Doves a hard time by standing it's ground and not putting up with their bullying. The female just showed up as I'm typing this (live update!). The Grosbeaks are taking advantage of the large amount of seed I put out. When we get a cool snap this late in the spring, the birds really seem to chow down and I have an active bird feeder all day long.
I also have lots of Painted Buntings (Redbutt, here) and a few Indigo Buntings. The Indigos were mainly females and 1-2 1st year males. As I type, the Grosbeak is getting braver and bolder. Maybe tomorrow it'll chase away the squrrel and keep the cat out of the tree.
