Before going to my doctor's appointment today, I decided to make a stop at Cutler Wetlands for my Bird of the Day effort. I looked out into the wetland area and had the following:

Mottled Duck
Blue-winged Teal
Northern Shoveler
Black-necked Stilt
American Avocet

Toe arrived when a moderately sized flock of Cave Swallows moved through, which unfortunately did not include any other species. We looked onto the grassy isle, and with the help of his scope, spotted out:

Long-billed Dowitcher
Lesser Yellowlegs
Stilt Sandpiper
Least Sandpiper

We went over to the eastern side of the wetlands to follow some landing peeps, which we could not find in the dense vegetation. Before going to my car, I decided to give the ditch on the east side a quick look for Solitary Sandpiper. A brownish bird flushed and flew briefly before landing. Toe called out, "Killdeer!" I said "Toe, that is not a Killdeer!" We exclaimed a couple times. We both looked at the bird land and agreed it had to be something unusual. Toe put the scope on it, and it turned out to be an UPLAND SANDPIPER. The bird strutted around on the berm, before flying out with some peeps and landing on the Spanish tiles of an apartment building across the lake.

Incredible bird, especially for spring!

Carlos
