I just got back from Tennessee and Georgia about an hour ago. I know this is not a board for these states, but I would like to share some of the birds I saw.
Lifers:
Summer Tanager- male, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia
Acadian Flycatcher- a few in Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia
Pine Siskins and Red Crossbills, Clingman's Dome, Great Smokey National Park, North Carolina side.
I saw some other good birds too. Indigo Buntings, Red-eyed, Blue-headed and Yellow-throated Vireos, Yellow, Yellow-throated, Black-throated Green, Prairie, Black-and-white, and Pine Warblers, many Cliff Swallows, Scarlet Tanager female. I got about 60 bird species the whole trip, with four nice lifers.
Other animals of note:
5 Black Bear- 1 crossing road, also mother and 3 juveniles in tree close to road, great looks!!!!
1 Bobcat
49 White-tailed Deer
1 Northern Water Snake
1 Eastern Garter Snake
1 Worm Snake
1 Northern Ringneck Snake
multiple Eastern Fence Lizards and Five-lined Skinks
TONS of beautiful butterflies such as many skippers, Eastern Black, Zebra, Spicebush, Pipevine and most prevelant Eastern Tiger Swallowtails.
Felipe also said he has had 40 lifers in Maine, such as Peregrine Falcon, Hermit Thrush, and Blackburnian Warblers.
I also have a question about Wood Thrushs in Tallahassee. When I was there in April of 1999 when I was 10 years old, I saw about 10 to 20 Wood Thrushs in one day in Downtown Tallahassee without much effort. According to what I have been reading, it is pretty hard to find these birds in North Florida, but it was easy in Down Town Tallahasee. Was this some kind of huge Thrush fall-out or is this regular? I am positive on the i.d. They constantly sang on top of the trees near the state capital building and the surrounding areas. Thanks.
