I was there on 3/26/09 with my son, Kyle, who originally posted the Kirtland's. We had good looks at the bird for 2-3 minutes, before it disappeared back into the bushes/trees, and it certainly appeared to be a Kirtland's. It was in the 1st "pond" area when you head east from the center, on the right side of the path (the pond where the large gator hangs out), in the cypresses and ferns. My first thought was "Magnolia", but it didn't look right; its back was much grayer, no distinct white wing-bars, no yellow on the top of its back end, and it didn't have the white line above/back from the eye. The bird was a very good match to the Kirtland's in my Nat-Geo guide. It was loosely associating in a group including 1 each of Common Yellowthroat, Palm Warbler, and Yellow-rumped Warbler.
We then headed further along the path, to the screech-owl house. There was a gentleman (I can't remember his name) there photographing the owls who, when asked if he'd seen anything else interesting (without us saying anything about the warbler), replied that he'd seen a Kirtland's Warbler about an hour earlier at the same location we saw the bird. He also said he'd seen it there the previous day as well. He said he'd also reported it to a lady at the center, but I don't think he gave her name. We were quite encouraged by this confirmation, and returned to the location, spending another hour unsuccessfully trying to relocate the bird for photos.
I'm not sure what else I can say about it, but my son and I feel confident it was a Kirtland's Warbler. I hope someone else can find it to confirm the siting.
Also, sorry for not posting this earlier. I only arrived back home Sunday, and did not have computer access before then......and I've been catching up on life since returning.
Cheers,
