A Purple Gallinule was spotted in the north pond between the trail and the fence at Snake Warrior Island, located just north of County Line Road. It is the first one I have spotted there. Snake Warrior Island is a Broward County Parks Natural Area, located just west of 441 and just north of County Line road on 62nd Ave., behind the Winn Dixie. It has a created wetlands that attracts the usual wetland species and some ducks-Blue-winged Teal, RIng-necked Duck, Mottled Duck in the winter. It seems to be a prime "potential" habitat for a future Masked Duck. I am hoping next year to conduct a joint Broward/Tropical Audubon field trip here to get people more acquainted with the site to have it birded more often. I have had 35-40 species (Spot-breasted Oriole, Savannah Sparrow, Black-throated Green) here before in that it also has a Live Oak hammock, open fields and native plantings. I believe Bryant Roberts has had a Cerulean Warbler there. Stay tuned for a field trip date in early winter.
