It was reported to me that there was a red-shouldered hawk male mating with a broad-winged hawk female at Greynolds Park in North Miami Beach last month. The hawks have now built a nest and have produced young (at least one). The nest is in a pine in a parking lot circle near the Boat House. I'm hoping someone who lives up that way, or someone who doesn't mind driving to that godawful part of the county, can go check this out and see if there are, indeed, two different species of hawks (check with the naturalists there if you can't find the nest).
Does anyone know if these two species of hawks have been known to interbreed before?
