Today I found a warbler in my yard around 10 feet high off the ground. I was at first happy to come across a warbler because I have not seen much species lately due to the long summer. I was watching it from about 30 feet as it worked some small trees. Eventually it came into plain view, but just for about 10 seconds. The bird was different from ones I have seen, which I realized right away. Description:
Very short tail
Parula sized
Two wing bars
Very drab colors compared to first year female, though
Did appear to have light eye brow
Very drab colored chest, remnisant yellowish color
from neck to mid belly
Did not call
Seemed very dull colored, even when compared to
first year female in Sibley's
I was not able to see the back color, which would
have helped.
Any ideas? I may see one soon as I will be birding Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park tommorow in Atlanta. After that Great Smokey National Park and Chattanooga with a target list of birds of 22!
Hopefully that Worm-eating Warbler will be seen along with others like Saw-Whet Owl, Red Crossbill, Brown-headed Nuthatch will be seen. I will be in a good combination of areas including grassland, pine land, mountains, marsh for shorebirds, and everything possible in Tennessee and Georgia. So far I have had 60 lifers since January 3, 2003. Hopefully some will be added, along with a trip for 4 days in New York and Pennsylvania's Presque Isle!
I will report everything seen a week from now.
