I have posted some video grabs of some of the great birds seen on Sunday July 27, 2003 pelagic trip from Key Largo. Paul Bithorn posted most of the details from that trip, thanks Paul.
Seeing two species of
storm-petrels side by side was a real treat. You could really see the
difference in the “Jizz” between the two species as well as the size
difference. We started chumming and drifting a little east and south of
the 409 hump for 7 miles and for one and a half hours chumming the whole
time. This brought us great views of Bridled Terns as well as
up
close and personal views of one Wilson’s Storm-Petrel and one
BAND-RUMPED STORM-PETREL. The Wilson’s Storm-Petrel really looks quite
a bit smaller than the Band-rumped Storm-Petrel. The flight pattern is
quite different as well, fluttery for the Wilson’s and shearwater like
for the Band-rumped.
The longer pointed wings of the Band-rumped
really look like a mini shearwater. In the photos below you can see the
long wings of the Band-rumped, notched tail and feet that don’t project
beyond the tail.
While the Wilson’s yellow feet stick out beyond the
tail with a shorter wing span.
