TAS Trip Report So Broward 2-28-2009 Leader: John Hutchison

18 Participants started at Long Key Park in Davie. It was a pleasant walk through the mature oak hammock but we had only a few warblers and other passerines. A Carolina wren sang loudly. The lagoon yielded representatives of most of our waders. We then went to Pines Blvd the Eagle Nest. The group got great views of the active nest including a nice view of one downy chick eaglet. We went on to Markham Park where a few went early and got a glimpse of a Snail Kite. But all were treated by 8 Purple Swamphen. A few in the group loved the scope views of three Savannah Sparrows. We had a nice shaded lunch at Markham. Temperature rose into the 80s. The group slit up to look for Ani in Ft Lauderdale (no luck), while others did the 3 miles plus walk at Plantation Preserve. The duck views were great especially a real red Ruddy duck. We did not see the Clay-colored Sparrow.

Total species: 58 ( Snail Kite and Swamphen are out of Tax order)
