Among the more interesting birds seen during a walk around the impoundments at the H. A. Campbell Public Use Area this morning were one drake and three hen Canvasbacks in the northeast area of the northernmost impoundment, two Peregrine Falcons in the same general area, and three Snail Kites northwest of the northwest corner of the north impoundment.
Overall duck numbers were down since my last visit in January with only several hundred Green-winged Teal and slightly lesser numbers of Blue-winged Teal, several dozen Northern Pintails and Mottled Ducks, about a dozen Ring-necked Ducks, and a few Northern Shovelers and American Widgeons. Possibly due to slightly high water levels shorebird numbers were also low; both Yellowlegs and Wilson s Snipe were common enough and there was one small flock of Black-necked Stilts but only about four Long-billed Dowitchers and one Stilt Sandpiper were seen. Wader numbers were also lower and only one American Bittern was seen and a few Least Bitterns were heard. There were a few hundred Tree Swallows on the wires and in the air as well as a couple of hundred Northern Rough-winged Swallows. About a dozen Purple Swamphens were seen or heard; an unusually high number. Conspicuously absent from the usual winter birds were Roseate Spoonbills and American White Pelicans.
