Brought a guest for a tour of the western part of the Tamiami Trail yesterday, 2/25. Stopped and walked the Big Cypress Bend and Kirby Storter trails. Seemed to be much more activity than on a visit a week ago at Big Cypress Bend. We found palm, yellow-rumped, prairie, pine, n. parula, yellowthroat, American redstart, and black-throated green warblers. Saw a northern waterthrush at the end of the Big Cypress Bend boardwalk.

Walking into Kirby Storter we heard a young ranger mention a Louisiana waterthrush. I was skeptical but then indeed saw a Louisana waterthrush at the end of that boardwalk. There too we found one magnolia warbler. Gnats seemed to be hatching off the pool there and the shore was covered with "palmy s" and the trees were full of myrtles. This was my first visit to this trail, and I found it very nice.

Also spotted a female summer tanager high in the canopy at Big Cypress Bend. Numerous g.c. flycatchers were calling and parula warblers and Carolina wrens were singing in force. A few gnatcathers were joining in the chorus.

The cypress is leafing out in the Big Cypress, but the water level is extremely low. Controlled burns have created a lovely green lawn across much of the prairie south of the Trail.
