Sunday before noon a cooper's hawk (in residence) attacked a mixed group of white winged dove, mourning dove and monk parakeets at the millet feeder. The monk parakeet wasn't very good at dodging. The hawk made off with the screaming parakeet in it's talons. Strangely the remaining parakeets followed and set up a squawking group making a great commotion while the hawk had dinner. In thirty minutes it was over and all the birds returned to their business.
Now I am left with my thoughts. I know the monk parakeets are exotic but from the perspective of Ais, Caloosahatchee, and Appalachicola, so am I. Maybe that is the whole point...those that can, survive, and the rest are better for it.
But the parakeets are pretty.
