I've been patiently awaiting the arrival of my Purple Martins for over 2 weeks (they usually arrive Jan. 31), and they finally made it yesterday. Maybe the cool weather slowed them up a bit. That's OK though, as I have remodeled the Martin house to make the rooms larger and installed smaller, redesigned holes to exclude the Starlings.
It seems the birds that arrived are all males (scouts) to check out the area and set up territories. The females should be around in a few days. I hope they adapt to the new, smaller entrance holes on the house. The Starlings are very aggressive and hard to keep out. They are also smart & fly away whenever I go out to shoo(t) them away.
For those Martin Landlords interested in the Purple Martin Houses, gourds, and other accessories, go to the Purple Martin Conservation Association's website at www.purplemartin.org
Another noteworthy bird observation, I had a record 7 Painted Buntings on my bird feeder at one time. 3 males, 4 females. Word's out I'm good host and liberal with the seed!
