While panning through the approximately 500 or so gulls loafing at the Cutler Wetlands early this morning (9:00 a.m.) I spotted a real nugget - a non-breeding adult Black-headed Gull. Look for a gull the same size as a Laughing Gull (16")with a straight, thin, dark red bill and dark red legs, a pale grey mantle and two black smudges - one through the eye and one behind the eye. I called over Stephen Paez to see the bird in my scope and called Carl Edwards, who was birding nearby at the Annex outside of E.N.P and he arrived in time to digiscope three decent identification photos, which will be posted later. Cutler Wetlands is on S.W. 223rd St. and S.W. 97th Avenue adjacent to Mt. Trashmore. The Tropical Kingbird is still at Dump Marsh. It was feeding along the canal behind the sewage treatment facility aroun 12 noon. Life is good................. and celebratory libations had to be held in abeyance to keep others out of danger while I participate in a nine-hole round of night golf as a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society that I will be playing tonight with glow balls.
