After Carlos and I quickly found the Purple Sandpipers at the jetty at New Smyrna Beach, we headed off to Daytona Beach Shores. We weren't sure where to go at first, but while driving down the street we saw gulls streaming overhead and thought, "this must be the spot." We bumped into birders including Dotty Robbins, Michael Brothers, Carl Edwards, Paul Lehman, and Gallus Quigley. Within a couple of minutes we had our first and second Glaucous Gulls. Shortly thereafter we had the Thayer's, which we observed at leisure for over 15 minutes. Finally, Carl Edwards drove by in his Hummer and told us that he had the Iceland Gull farther up. We hitched a ride with several other birders on the running boards of his vehicle and quickly spotted the Iceland Gull. Oh, by the way, we also had a Pomarine Jaeger close to shore harrassing a gull. It was a great day learning how to identify these gull species.
