The eagles in our neighborhood laid their first egg on December 13, so we expected it to hatch this weekend. We were looking for a change in behavior to indicate the arrival of the eaglet, and saw no changes until this morning, when there were several.
We are also concerned because, on Friday afternoon, utility marking flags were placed all along the front of the 20 acre woodland that holds the nest, indicating that construction, only 200 feet away from the nest tree, may be imminent. The long weekend will delay our learning from the city just what they intend to do. Maybe something simple like putting in a traffic sign, but if heavy equipment will be at work this could be very detrimental to the fate of the nestlings.
