Hiatus Road between McNab and Commercial Avenues has several small wetlands, ponds, and wooded or grassy areas in between large commercial buildings; these are mostly on the west side of the street. A sidewalk runs the whole way, and it is very convenient to use a bike there, though parking and walking also works. You can also go in some of the large parking lots (esp. the one across from the fire station) and find good places away from Hiatus. In about 1 1/2 hours this morning, I saw lots of the usual waders (including great blue) and warblers; the more interesting birds were:
osprey
cooper's hawk
northern harrier
belted kingfisher (actually a bit south of Commercial, next to a canal)
loggerhead shrike (3. including one beauty that flew within 15 feet)
pine warbler (a big deal for me, as I was finally able to ID one for sure)
purple swamphen (11)
eastern phoebe (2, one young, one adult)
Also, in season, least terns nest on that big building across from the fire station.
