Today, I headed out to Dump Marsh in the late afternoon to find the Tropical Kingbird and Yellow-headed Blackbird that have been reported there. After walking all the way down the path of the first pond (the one that stretches north-south with the canal and line of dead snags to its west), I found only the usual birds including Savannah Sparrows, Osprey, Wood Storks, American Kestrel, and a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, among other birds. As I walked back north, I found the TROPICAL KINGBIRD on one of the wires chasing European Starlings. The bird would vocalize every few minutes.
Trey, Jocelyn, Greg, Chris, and Lili soon showed up. Trey, Jocelyn, and Greg were able to get silhouette views of the bird, but several ATVs sped down the path and spooked the bird. The bird was not seen again during our stay. As night set, we had an AMERICAN BITTERN fly in to roost at Dump Marsh. Judd Patterson then arrived.
We had five LESSER NIGHTHAWKS feeding over Dump Marsh at twilight, ending a great afternoon of birding.
Carlos
