Although this didn't happen in Florida, Alexander Wilson (1766-1813), the "Father of American Ornithology", was known to have shot an Ivory-billed Woodpecker in North Carolina. Telling a suspicious innkeeper that the madly squalling bundle in his arms was a baby, Wilson hurried it to his room, then left to find some food. In his absence, the huge bird proceeded to demolish the bed, a table, and much of one wall. (from Scott Weidensaul's Of a Feather: A Brief History of American Birding)
