The zamia (coontie) at Hoechoka Hammock have seeded in great numbers this winter. The seeds were scarified and randomly dispersed around the hammock and pineland areas to increase food source for atyla butterflys. This evening while walking the borders I discovered that catbirds were busy eating the coating of the seeds. I recall reading some research done at Barry University that turkeys were believed to be the original feeders are zamia as the seeds were so large and germinated quicker if scarified by a file, tumbler, (or wild turkey gizzard). But until this day I never saw any bird ever feed on zamia seeds. Anyone ever see this behavior before?
