While birding the Southwest Regional Library Wetlands in Pembroke Pines this weekend we found an Audubon's Warbler at the entrance to the boardwalk to the wetlands. We had walked about 75 yards into the boardwalk when we heard a loud call coming from the trees at the beginning of the boardwalk. We looked with our binos from there and saw a couple of Palm, Myrtle Warblers and BG Gnatcatcher. Then a bird flew to the top of the tree and ran all the others off, we immediately noticed the yellow on the throat. We rushed over to get better looks, by then it had flown into the shrubs. We phished softly and the bird came out of the shrubs and gave us awesome looks! That is when we noticed the bird was lacking the white supercilium of a Myrtle, it also had more of a wing patch rather than wingbars, the cheek had a uniform color and a small yellow crown. I had the camera in my back pack which I should have had set up; I set it up and went over to never find the bird again by then the sun was starting to set. The bird may have moved on or gone into the wetlands to one of the trees in the middle of the wetlands. Mariel watched it a while I was setting up the camera, but I did not make it in time to photograph the bird. Next time I will have my camera set up!

We had a great time watching a Belted Kingfisher hover while looking for a meal, we love to watch Kingfisher behavior they are so awesome. Other birds that were seen included Eastern Phoebe, Wood Stork, Egrets, Herons, Turkey Vulture, Black Vulture, Cooper s Hawk, we missed both Bittern which we expected as well as Gallinule and Purple Swamphen. We tried to phish up a Marsh Wrens hoping to photograph some with no luck, maybe next time. We had a great time taking some time to bird close to home. Below are directions to the wetlands, it is a small area but has hosted some great birds in the past.

We tried to relocate the Audubon s Warbler the following morning with no luck. Sorry for the late report but we have been really busy!

From I-75, exit at Sheridan Street. Drive west 1.2 miles to the wetlands are on the north side, the wetland is located at the east end of the library parking area (no fee, open until sunset).

Nature is Awesome
