Carlos Sanchez and I made it to Pelican Island NWR in Indian River County by about seven fifteen this morning. We arrived just minutes before the bird was located as the field was hit by sunlight. We watched the bird for several minutes, left to bird elsewhere, and headed back to see the bird again once it moved closer to the road. A very stunning bird, and worth waking up at 4:00 am for during vacation.

Also seen in the area:
Mottled Duck
American Wigeon
Northern Shoveler
Hooded Merganser
Lesser Scaup- hundreds flying over the Indian River
Ring-necked Duck
American Bittern
Least Bittern- called
Sora- called
Sedge Wren
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Swamp Sparrow
Grasshopper Sparrow
American Goldfinch

American Oystercatcher and Red-breasted Merganser were seen from the overlook facing the Indian River.

Northern Gannets were heading south on the Atlantic, and Wilson's Plover was the best shorebird on the beach, south of Sebastian Inlet.
