I did do some birding today on the East Coast with some Florida Gulf Coast friends from Naples & Fort Myers. The four Smooth-billed Anis were present at the 800 Building in Hollywood(?) or Hallandale(?) -- not sure which. However, after seeing those birds and then scooting up to Yamato Scrub in Boca Raton to see the Least Grebes, we made our way back to US Rte 27 and then headed north toward Holeyland WMA. We first stopped at a rest/picnic area on the right (as you head north) about 2 miles or so from the sign for Holeyland that heads west from US Rte 27. I didn't catch the name of this rest area but I know it had "Everglades" in its name. Duh! Can anyone tell me the name of it please? There we saw an American Redstart along with many Palm Warblers and Common Yellowthroats. Also present were a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Swamp Sparrow and many Boat-tailed Grackles and other common birds. There was this flowering tree (see photo) that I KNOW I've seen before but I can't put a name on it. Can anyone help? That leaf is huge and the flower is beautiful. Thanks. We stopped briefly at both STA-3/4 & Campbell WMA on the road into Holeyland. That was my first time for both area. Nothing earth-shattering at either but there were a few Purple Swamphens, many Blue-winged Teal, two Caspian Terns plus all of the usual waders, coots, moorhens, etc.
