I birded Everglades National Park today as well as areas outside the park, with Carolyn and John Baker of Chicago. Our primary focus was to see Greater Flamingos, we saw them as well as the Rusty Blackbird at Pay-hay-okee. We also saw several Short-tailed Hawks in the park of both color morphs as well Purple Swamphen and Smooth-billed Anis outside the park. We were pleased to see the the Greater Flamingos have increased in number from 2 or 3 this fall to 14-birds! We saw the birds in Snake Bight channel by boat and had good looks. The birds would have been visible from the Snake Bight Trail boardwalk. From the boardwalk I believe you would be looking off to the right. This is the first time this season that I think that you could see them from Snake Bight boardwalk. Any birders who would like to try for them from Snake Bight trail may have luck. Just be prepared for the mosquitoes and the two mile each way walk!
The Smooth-billed Anis were on the Ft. Lauderdale side of the canal next to the 800 building located in Dania. We saw at least four birds looking across the canal under the high tension wires.
