After seeing so many Least Grebes at the Rio Grande/Harlingen Birding Festival I was anxious to see how ours were doing. I spent an hour there yesterday, Monday, and saw what was just reported, below. The babies now really have grebehood down, as before I left only one did. They are close to adult size and have almost lost their head stripes. The second adult I did not see, though searched for her. The last time I saw (her) was about a month ago when her mate was very upset and calling loudly at a Pied-billed grebe and she came out of the reeds to investigate/help. Her appearance was brief but confirming. By my rounded off calculations the second nest should have hatched near the end of October. I think she may be gone, perhaps a coon/hawk? Cook the coon/forgive the hawk. Coon and House Sparrow Stew.
