Calling All Birders! Researchers Need Your Help in Study of Declining Snowy Plovers

Snowy Plovers are listed as Threatened by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and recent surveys suggest this species is continuing to decline in parts of their Florida range, particularly in Southwest Florida. Research determining the underlying reasons for these declines is ongoing, and one important goal of this work is to gain a better understanding of the annual movement and distribution patterns of Snowy Plovers in Florida. To this end, biologists have individually marked Snowy Plovers throughout Florida with unique color-band combinations, and they need your help re-sighting and reporting observations of these individuals to build a better picture of where and when Snowy Plovers move. If you bird regularly in the Panhandle and Southwest Florida where these birds are found most often, print out the reporting instructions for these sightings and keep them handy in case you need them! Instructions on what information to collect (band colors, positions, location, etc.) and where to report these sightings is posted on the Florida Bird Conservation Initiative s website.
