Here are a few highlights from a Veteran s Day weekend visit to Everglades National Park and south Dade County.
There was a first winter Franklin s Gull among the Laughing Gulls on the sandbar off the Flamingo Visitor Center late in the afternoon on 11/9-10. Lesser Nighthawks were flying over the northwest corner of C-loop in the Flamingo Campground about twenty minutes after sunset on 11/9-10. On 11/10 an adult male Blue-winged Warbler was seen a little over half way up Bear Lake Road. This morning on 11/11 there was a Salt Marsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow in the western end of the Sparrow Fields north of the Coastal Prairie Trail and a Swainson s Hawk soaring over the same area.
My high count for Swainson s Hawks at Lucky Hammock was twelve roosting early in the morning in the field east of the brushy area across the road from Lucky Hammock on 11/9. There was also a Wilson s Warbler at Lucky Hammock on 11/8-9. There were plenty of Short-tailed Hawks around Flamingo all weekend as well as a few Peregrine Falcons. Lest I forget, I got in on the two Tropical Kingbirds for the price of on deal at the Dump Marsh on 11/8.
