Wakodahatchee is still closed for maintenance so many of the regulars and some newbies came to Green Cay this morning. The wind was northerly all morning and cloud cover was constant but rain very light and avoidable under the rest areas.

A cooper's hawk has posted the bird feeder on the east side in the hammock by the chickee as its restaurant. It was quite the show for 30 minutes. It was about 40 feet distance and 200-500 mm shots were a cinch. The bird pounced on a moor hen baby while we watched. That was dramatic. I would guess that buntings, warblers, and maybe a jay or two are part of its diet. If you don't have a Cooper's hawk picture in your portfolio---this is the place to go. The chickee is a comfortable resting place also.

Warbler's are everywhere at Green Cay. No point in listing them, just consider that all the regulars are there and in profuse numbers the likes of which I haven't seen in five years. We thought the show at 7:30-8:45 was the best with flocks of warblers moving thrugh the parking lot and into the oaks by the pavillion.

A flock of black-bellied whistling ducks was present for the whole morning. Wading birds were very few. Blue winged teal and mottled ducks were abundant. Red-shouldered hawks were heard but never seen. But there was one blue jay with a remarkable mimic of the red-shouldered hawk call. Quite impressive!
