Inspired by Larry's post, I went to the Smooth-billed Ani spot and found the troupe within 5 minutes foraging at the foot of a gumbo limbo tree. One then proceeded to feed on an earthworm right by a recycling bin.

I noticed 1-2 birds behaving as sentinels while the others foraged. I also saw the sunning behavior. After just 30 minutes of watching these amazing birds, you really start to notice how incredibly social they are. Very neat birds. I never saw more than six at any one time, but I am sure the seventh was around -- perhaps on a nest?

It also saw that the empty lot these birds live in...well, there really is nothing special about this sort of habitat nor is this piece of habitat very large. There has to be more going on than just simple habitat loss. The birds I witnessed in Venezuela lived in a very similar habitat to that found on the grassy open area on the west side of Matheson Hammock.
