Driving into the unpaved portion of SW 97 Av as you would going to Dump Marsh, park before the gate and continue by foot along the canal towards east pond. On the northwestern-most edge of east pond a variety of bare snags peaked above the tallish foliage, the Merlin shifted from a few of these posts while dragoncatching.

It was a perfect Taiga male with intact plumage, rusty breast and blue back. This would be fantastic on video- if you are successful please let me know. I first noticed the bird around 5:45pm and continued watching it quite closely until about 6:15.

I've seen Hobbies and Red-footed Falcons do this, but they usually devour their prey on the wing. Merlins prefer returning to their perches, like flycatchers.
