I just watched 3 A. Kestrels do a dramatic display, swooping and calling for 30+ minutes. And two weeks ago I saw a similar scene at Yamato Scrub, where again 3 A. Kestrels worked to mob a Red-shouldered Hawk. There were no aggressive moves seen between the Kestrels on either occasion.
My question - I'm not used to seeing them in groups of 3 - do they do any cooperative hunting, or might this be more like the establishment of winter territories for newly-arrived birds? I'm really curious and thought some of you might know!
