I see these birds fairly regularly in the High Pines area of south Miami-Dade: about mockingbird-sized, bright orange body, black wings and tail with some white markings, black triangle on breast. The young ones are lighter yellow. Saw two in the late afternoon sun feeding on a bright green lawn, flying up and down to a tree to feed the young one. Not disturbed by me or my dog walking fairly close by.
Another less frequent sight in High Pines late afternoon/early evenings is a very small owl. I usually spot them because when they perch, other birds nearby (usually blue-jays) raise a ruckus.
Can anyone tell me what these birds are? Also, what is a good birding book for this area? Thanks.
