An interesting afternoon/evening at Matheson turned up a few more migrants including 9 warblers:
Prairie
Parula
Am. Redstart
Ovenbird
Blackpoll
Black and White
Black-throated Blue
Prothonotary (1)
Common Yellowthroat
and a slew of other neat birds including:
Swallow-tailed Kites (3 circling, diving, and calling at each other in the open field at the west end of the hammock- super cool!)
Great Horned Owl (pished out from the large ficus behind the greenhouse at the south end of the open field mentioned above)
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Indigo Bunting (1 adult male, 1 molting male, 1 female- seen above the limestone house/structure next to the greenhouse area mentioned above...this looks like a really good place for buntings, grosbeaks, and any other seedeaters that might fall-out here)
Carolina Wren (several singing at west end of wide, more trafficked trail)
Cedar Waxwings
Common Nighthawk (heard over Fairchild Tropical Garden)
parrots of all shapes, sizes, and nationalities
Most birds were found on the west side of the road, in the hammock. Most were seen from the trail at the north end of the lot which parallels the wider, more heavily trafficked trail to the south.
One bummer, my Minidisk recorder crapped out on me...I think it'll have to go into the shop....what fantastic timing!
cheers
David
