Every year, on the various citizen science projects like the CBC, Great Backyard Bird Count, NAMC and e-Bird, etc., Brewer's blackbirds are reported south of Lake Okeechobee, sometimes in numbers. In doing a little research, it appears that VERY few of these reports are valid. For example, in my own county (Collier) in Stevenson & Anderson, there is an accepted sighting by Paul Sykes for 4 Apr 1969 as well as a few reports from Key West but that's it. It is not recorded for Collier County on the 1991 checklist sanctioned by Collier County Audubon Society and compiled by Ted Below. I know of no one who has ever seen one in South Florida. Surely, I haven't in over 10 years of birding full time year round down here. The situation with Rusty Blackbirds is similar. The few records that exist south of Lake Okeechobee are old. Does this mean that these two species once occurred here more frequently and now no longer do? Any help out there?
