The least grebe family at Yamato Scrub area is doing well. the babies are diving a bit but don't stay under long. We observed them for several hours this morning in between rain showers. The birds hang close to the north shoreline of the north of the two small lakes. They venture out every 20 minutes or so for about 15 minutes and then return to cover. Red shouldered hawks, great herons and one perigrine are the threats.
After careful observation with very powerful spotting scopes there seems to be evidence that the parent grebes are about to try for a second clutch. The activity and concentration on the nest indicates that the female may already have or be about to lay a second time. Is that a possibility, probability?
