The Beadle and Rising 2006 book (Tanagers, Cardinals, and Finches of the United States and Canada) also indicate that males in basic plumage commonly show buffy wing bars. While talking with other banders this morning, we recalled banding a female Scarlet Tanager in 2006 with wing bars. Ned Brinkley also mentions faint wing bars for female SCTA in his book, Field Guide to Birds of North America.
