If you're near Virginia Key during the next 2 weeks, it's worthwhile to drive along Arthur Lamb, Jr. Road and make several stops. Clusters of ripe Virginia Creeper are drawing thrushes, White-crowned Pigeons and Great Crested Flycatchers. If you see Australian Pines mixed with ficus, there will probably be activity. Today I had a large mixed flock of passerines that included warblers (Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Green and Blue, Pine, American Redstart, Ovenbird, Palm and Northern Parula), Swainson's Thrush, Red-eyed Vireo and a calling Eastern Wood-Pewee. Also nearby were 3 American Kestrels, 2 Merlins, 2 Peregrine Falcons and Red-shouldered and Broad-winged Hawks. The Great Black-Hawk was calling periodically down the road.
