They are probably nesting in your neighborhood. They are nesting in mine which is about a mile northwest of you. They have been nesting in Miami-Dade County for 20+ years now. Before that one never saw them in summer.
The most recent issue of National Wildlife
has an atrticle about them and a great picture of
a male red-bellied woodpecker on the cover that really shows the red on the belly. Have you seen a red-headed woodpecker yet? The last one that I saw was in Gainesville. The last one to be in Miami-Dade County that I know of was a couple of days before Andrew in a pineland west of the Eastridge Retirement Village on SW87thAve just north of Old Cutler Road. You will know one if you ever see one. Good luck.
